TMT stands for Thermo Mechanical Treatment.
Thermo-mechanically treated bars are high-strength reinforcement bars having a tough outer core and a soft inner core. The soft inner core gives the TMT bar great tensile strength and elongation point. This design is unique to the TMT bars and gives them a superior ductility.
Without TMT bars, the modern construction industry would not be what it is. TMT interwoven through a concrete structure strengthens it and makes it everlasting.
The most salient and highly recommended use of TMT bars is for building critical infrastructure which requires a high degree of reinforcement strength to withstand high pressure and increased load bearing capacity.
TMT bars are produced by passing steel wires though temperature-controlled water cooling systems after the rolling is done. This causes hardening in the outer layer of the TMT bars and it also keeps the inner core soft. This process makes them highly water resistant and that is why TMT bars are ideal for constructing structures which are meant to remain in direct contact with moisture or water.
The very first step of the manufacturing process involves passing the steel wires through a rolling mill stand. Thereafter, these rolled steel wires are again passed through the Tempcore water cooling system. While passing the wires through the water cooling system, the water pressure is optimized. The sudden quenching and drastic change in temperature toughen the outer layer of the steel bar, thus making it super tough and durable.
Once this process is over, the TMT bars are subject to atmospheric cooling. This is done in order to equalize the temperature difference between the soft inner core and the tough exterior. Once the TMT bar cools down, it slowly turns into a ferrite-pearlite mass. The inner core remains soft giving the TMT bar great tensile strength and elongation point.
This design is unique to the TMT bars and gives superior ductility to the bars. Also, this unique manufacturing technique and the absence of cold stress makes this bar corrosion-resistant and boosts its weldability.
- More strength and ductility. The high strength of the bars make them an ideal material to be used with concrete for making structures more robust. The unique ribbed pattern on the TMT bars also provides extra strength by bonding them more tightly with concrete. The ductility of the TMT bars makes them easier to work with, and pre-welded meshes can be made off-site reducing the overall construction time.
- Corrosion-resistant. The TMT manufacturing process imparts anti-rust properties to the bars. Coarse carbides, which are the main culprits for corrosion in steel, are stopped from building up during the water-cooling phase making the structures made from TMT steel more durable.
- Fire-resistant. Due to its high thermal stability, TMT bars can withstand temperatures ranging from 400 to 600 degree Celsius; this ensures the building’s structural integrity even during a fire.
- Earthquake proof. The soft core of the TMT bars imparts a high level of ductility – giving the structures made with TMT more leeway to manage dynamic and seismic loading.
- Cost-effective. TMT bars have higher tensile strength and better elongation value, which basically means you need less steel for the same amount of construction. Apart from reducing the cost of raw material, this also saves cost on transportation and storage. TMT steel bars are also easier to manage on-site, which leads to a further cost saving due to reduced construction and fabrication time.
The grade of a TMT bar means the level of stress required to deform it.
There are 11 grades of TMT bar. The commonly used are Fe-500, Fe-550, Fe-500D and Fe-550D.
Fe-500 grade. Fe or Ferrum is the chemical representation of iron in the periodic table. Fe-500 means a force of 500 N/sq.mm. is required to deform the TMT bar. It is used in RCC constructions in buildings, bridges and other concrete structures.
Fe-415 grade. The grade means a force of 415 N/sq.mm. is required to deform the bar. Due to its great bending ability and resistance of dynamic loading, the Fe-415 grade has replaced the Fe-500 grade.
Fe-550 grade. It has similar properties to the Fe-500 grade but differs in the tensile strength and yield. It is commonly used in RCC construction exposed to marine, coastal or underground environment.
Fe-500 and Fe-500D are types of TMT steel bars. The letter “D” in Fe-500D implies ductility which means that the steel bars have a higher percentage of elongation.
The structures which require more ductility are skyscrapers, stadiums, fly-overs, airports, malls, multiplexes, dams, etc. that demand “D” grade TMT bars.
Fe500 and Fe 500D have the same 0.2 percent proof stress/yield stress (Min) whereas the tensile strength is increased by 2%. Tensile strength (Min) for Fe 500 is 545 MPa and for Fe 500D it is 565 MPa.
As per IS:1786, Fe500 contains S+P 0.105% collectively and individually 0.055% each. Fe500D contains S+P 0.075% collectively and individually 0.04% each. The elongation norm for Fe500 is 12% and Fe500D is 16%.
From the chemical composition point, Fe 500D has 0.25% Carbon (max) as compared to 0.30% (max) in Fe 500. Also the maximum percentage of Sulphur and Phosphorus are lower in Fe 500D.
With the lower quantities of carbon, sulphur and phosphorous, Fe500D helps in preserving the steel and resisting earthquake shocks in future.
Elongation of TMT bars and the strength of the rods on applying tension or force is higher in the D variant of the rods. These enhanced mechanical properties of the D grades TMT bars allow elevated resistance of the bars to natural calamities and also better resistance under stress.
Salient applications of “D” grade of TMT bars:
“D” denotes ductility, which means these bars are highly seismically resistant. Hence, they are preferred in earthquake zones 3, 4 and 5. They give guaranteed elongation well above 16%.
The 500D grade has balanced mechanical properties of higher ductility, which is most suitable for bridges, dams, high-rise apartments (skyscrapers), industrial structures, flyovers, wind mills, earthquake prone zones, mountain bridges, railways bridges, structures such as airports, ports, hospitals, cantilever structures, tunnels or concrete roads, statues and other load bearing structures.
TMT binding wires are used to tie TMT rebars at the joints, which helps to hold the structure intact.
TMT steel bars come is different diameters such as 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, and 36 mm.
8-10 mm are used in slabs and stair ups, which typically bear the load in slab homes.
12-25 mm are used in beams and columns to help them withstand external loads.
32-36 mm are used in complex projects such as dams and bridges.
